Why can't the press just report the facts and not add there own interpretations?

Almost every news report here in Los Angeles on this story is prefaced with the blurb that "longshoreman make $80,000.00 to $150,000.00 a year." In my unelightened mind I thought good! At least no one will feel sorry for them. Much to my dismay, people here believe that $80k + a year is a "living wage."
