"a
high-velocity rifle firing a .223-caliber bullet was used in at least three of the shootings. The bullet is used in hunting rifles and M-16s and
makes a large wound as it enters the body"
Where do they get this stuff?!?
This is a 22 caliber bullet, very small entry hole. Rifles are not high velocity per se, but the ammo is "high velocity" when it is fired through such a rifle.

I recall a line from William S. Burroughs which he stole from Hemmingway about that. It was, as well as I can remember it: "The hole where the bullet went in was about the size of a pencil. The hole where the bullet came out was large enough to put you fist in if you had a small fist and you wanted to put it there."

More accurately, it can make a large hole as it exits the body (depending on the composition of the bullet).

These stories are generally penned by MORONS who A) have never fired a weapon and/or B) have an anti-Second Amendment bias(most reporters/infobabes).
And did you notice how the TV coverage of the ATF "Show and Tell" about the TYPE of weapon suspected focused on those nasty looking -- shudder -- "assault rifles," almost completely neglecting the far more accurate bolt action hunting arm???
If you're going to take ONE SHOT, the weapon of choice is the bolt action rifle with a heavy competition barrel, NOT the nasty looking assault rifle designed for rapid-fire combat situations.
