From what I understand, it's safe to shoot .223 ammo out of a 5.56 barrel, but not vice-versa. Go ahead and call to confirm that, though.

A .223 Remmington and a 5.56 NATO are the same cartridge. One is a U.S. commercial designation and the other is a metric military designation.

Some variations in bullet weight and bullet construction are encountered but are fully interchangable in firearms marked with either designation.

Bullet weight can vary from 40-70 grains and be either full metal jacket, hollow point, soft point or steel tipped penetrating round as the current NATO spec SS-109 bulleted round is.

Cartridge nomneclature can be very confusing for the uninitiated!

I have quite a few plastic bandoliers of these green tips that I sure hope I have not wasted money on. Just to have...you know. I also have a bunch of NATO Ball for my M1-A1. Will check this out before I try any.
