This wouldn't be happening if the state legislatures appointed senators. In fact, I bet all the politics going right now would be different if the state legislatures appointed senators. Right. Time to repeal the 17th Amendment.

I can't actually find a good website on this matter, but I thought that Mink's seat (prior to her return to Congress) was in the hands of Republican for one term. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

But that would mean we would be following the constitution as it was written in that regard, and we just couldn't have that now could we. Those old white guys set up one heck of a system of government, it is such a shame to see it falling apart around us. It's been falling apart for a while. Read Sobran's piece How Tyranny Came To America, wherein he says, "I call the present system PostConstitutional America. As I sometimes put it, the U.S. Constitution poses no serious threat to our form of government."
