That's not quite the story. The companies locked out the greedy unions. The unions had been engaging in a work slow down for several weeks at least and had fought all attempts to modernize the ports. To the extent any modernization has happened the unions also are demanding collective bargaining rights over new computer operator employees who would be considered management by the companies and exempt from the CBA.
Until unions stop supporting Democrats, and the AFL-CIA blowhard John Sweeney, I say screw them.

I still am in favor of American workers over foreign shipping companies. Should these guys lose their jobs just because a foreign company wants cheap labor and huge profits? Not in my book. I don't like globalization, sorry.

That's not quite the story. The companies locked out the greedy unions. Well, that happened here once. The unions kept asking for more and more from the Ann Page Food Company (A&P Foods). The Company told them no. The union went on strike once more.
The company brought in some trucks, loaded them with the factory equipment, and left town. Nothing remains except a huge empty building the county can't sell. Been empty for years now.
Now the union members don't even have jobs. They got too greedy.
