Menendez I could see.
In fact, I think he becomes NJ's Senator by 2006 regardless who wins this year's election.
Torricelli is far too damaged for this to happen. He would have to run again in '04 and would have another tough time of it most likely. His career is finished.

Severin runs hot and cold on Republicans, but an interesting take. Isn't it amazing, how no scenario,no matter how unethical or illegal, is never considered to be too far fetched for the Democrats ?? CNN's Jonathan Karl said this afternoon, that when asked if he would give his war chest to old Frank-Torch said the lawyers would have to sort it out, it might not be legal ( Ha, Ha),blah, blah. When asked if he would resign his seat-the Torch became enflamed, spewing curses, according to CNN. So all is still not well among the NJ Mafia.

He'd only have two years as an appointee. Not going to happen.

Since Lautenberg turns 79 in January, he decides to perk up and make decent a run at the election. Lautenberg does himself in by overdosing on Viagra. RATS don't tell anyone until the election is over. Lautenberg wins the popular vote. Democratic Gov. McGreevey appoints Torricelli to the seat for another six years. It can happen...

You laugh?

The Dems HAVE TO have a candidate on the ballot so that they are capable of committing voter fraud. It would be too time consuming to conduct a write in fraud campaign. They need to be able to either punch stacks with a nail or use a black marker on optical scan ballots. They know it will still be difficult with Lautenberg but with no candidate on the ballot their goose is cooked.

The Dems HAVE TO have a candidate on the ballot so that they are capable of committing voter fraud. If the law is applied as written, they've got a candidate on the ballot - Robert Torricelli. The Dems would not have had to risk their party's reputation nationwide to implement the scenario you described.
