This article points out one of the weaknesses of a democracy.

A democracy works best when the minority affirms the decision of the majority after having had an open debate and resolving vote. The word "loyal opposition" is derived from this process.

When however the opposition continues their struggle and attempts to thwart the legitimately established will of the majority the democracy is in essence reduced to an oligarchy. A minority of obstructionist holds hostage the ability of the government to implement the will of the majority.

This process of resisting the spirit of our democracy has been the hallmark of the Democratic party these past 40 years. This process has been in effect so long that the citizenry has come to accept this perversion as "part of the game of politics".
