I was listening to NPR on my morning drive (about 6 am) and they were talking about how they have mapped the genome of malaria and the mosquito that carries it. I thought this was going to be an interesting science story until the first person they interviewed said the following:

"The United States is largely responsible for the 1-3 million deaths that occur in Africa due to malaria. The United States could do so much more in helping these counties in prevention programs and they do not"

MUTHER F**CHER - Yes, the USA is at fault. It is always our fault. People living in malaria infested areas are not at fault. Corrupt dictators of these African countries are not at fault. Environmentalists who banned DDT and other pesticides are not at fault. Every bad thing in the world is the United State's fault.

Of course, if we do find a cure/vaccine (at our expense) all these countries will demand we give it to them for free...

I think I might have heard the same story. Some guy was whineing that people in the US spend $450 million a year on flea collars for their pets and that amount would be enough to spray for mosquitos in all of Africa.

Malaria in Third World countries is America's fault? What, have we been sending them mosquitos? Life is so much better when you avoid NPR. They are such a bunch of smug, U.S.-despising squish-heads, and I HATE IT THAT THEY'RE USING MY MONEY. The entire U.S. House is up for re-election this year. Is anyone asking their congressperson if they'll vote to continue to fund NPR?

If anyone, or any group, is to blame for malaria-related deaths in the Third World, look no further than the radical enviromental left, which successfully fought to have DDT banned (naturally, for specious junk-science reasons). As a mosquito killer, DDT was/is extremely effective, and would have done wonders in gutting the bug population throughout the hapless African continent and elsewhere where malaria flourishes.

......I have a question please...isn't NPR part of Public Broadcasting Corporation?....what has PBS done with all their money from licensed products like Big Bird, Barney, the Civil war ect....why do they keep coming to the taxpayer and viewers for cash?...have they squandered it on salaries?....I expect that in short order PBS TV will be gone....specialized channels on cable are killing them now......I think NPR did pretty good at first because all they had to compete with was the "morning zoo" shock jock format over on the AM band...that's changing now....you can get some pretty good morning talk radio these days in the morning in my area [Baltimore-Washington]

The ONLY thing they are good for is if you can stomach it, you'll be able to find out what is on the left's current agenda.

In a related story, NPR has decided to put out a newspaper for more in depth coverage on their "news" stories.
It is expected this bimonthly publication will be called PRAVDA.

NPR is on the front line of the liberal propaganda war, carpet-bombing its listeners with left-wing talking points.

"Support for N-P-R-r-r" every 5 minutes. How many times an hour! Before and after everything they do. And the man has the nerdiest voice possible.

"Support for N-P-R-r-r..." - at which point I flip to another station.

Just hearing that voice is why I don't "support" NPR. Notice how all the voices sound the same? All snooty and/or nerdy.

I should mention that the only time I listen to NPR is when the conservative station is having commercials. Luckily the two stations are exactly opposite each other on the AM/FM dial. When I flip the switch to AM, I am on the conservative station. When they go to commercials, I flip to FM, and I'm on NPR. Just in time to hear "Support for N-P-R-r-r...".

First off, only 2% of NPR's budget comes from the government, most of that from the NEA and NEH, so defunding them is only going to make the pledge drive a little longer. PBS gets about 13% of their budget from the feds. The funding has been continually cut since '95, and are now about half what they were then.

When the Gingrich House tried to cut it altogether, there was a huge hue and cry from the population, they were bombarded with angry phone calls and letters, and they dropped the idea like a hot potato.

Second, Big Bird, Barney, the Civil War et al. are created by independent production companies--the Children's Television Workshop for Sesame Street, Ken Burns' company, etc.,--and sold to PBS. The producers retain the licensing rights.

So what if it's only a small fraction of their budget? It still means that NPR is compelling me, with the threat of imprisonment and financial ruin if I refuse, to support them. That, more than their editorial stance, is what offends me. If there is truly an audience for their ideas let them stand or fall on their own.

Exactly. Two percent is two percent too much. I don't want a dime of my money going to support this leftist drivel. These are people who think Norman Mailer is one of the great thinkers of the 20th century. Snort. If the dweebs at NPR feel so strongly about malaria in Africa, then I would prefer that they take the two percent and send it to African vector control efforts. As long as I don't listen, I don't care if they have to beg the livelong day.
