*Ploughing at Night*
A husband and wife were driving down a country lane on their way to
visit some friends. They came to a muddy patch in the road and the car
became bogged. After a few minutes of trying to get the car out by
themselves, they saw a young farmer coming down the lane, driving some
oxen before him.
He stopped when he saw the couple in trouble and offered to pull the car
out of the mud for $50. The husband accepted and minutes later the car
was free.
The farmer turned to the husband and said, "You know, you're the tenth
car I've helped out of the mud today."
The husband looks around at the fields incredulously and asks the
farmer, "When do you have time to plough your land? At night?"
"No," the young farmer replied seriously, "Night is when I put the water
in the hole"

For several years during the course of my relatively extensive business travels I have been making a habit of noticing service members in or out of uniform as they travel.
1. I thank them for their service.
2. I make the discussion about them and their service - not me - when asked I will say I was in the Marines a hundred years ago. These kids do not necessarily want to hear an old man's war stories.
3. When the situation warrants it I have been known to invite them into the Red Carpet Club or bar and buy a round to make the point that they are important and appreciated.
4. I have been known to get my frequent flyer upgrade to first class and "pass it on" to a servicemember. I have had gate agents react warmly to such a request.
5. I've left them alone when, like the Army Staff Sergeant, on last night's flight they seemed to be able to fall asleep standing up. Then, I say a prayer thanking God for these men and women and what they are doing for us.
6. I tell them about FreeRepublic and the Canteen and that they should check it out.
Thank you Snow and AntiJen for the great work that you and the canteeners are doing here.
Great Idea TomKow!
Regards,
