The detainees are held for weeks or months and are generally deported. Since the summer, the INS has chartered two planes to send about 250 detained Pakistanis back to their homeland, an INS official said.

The U.S. Census Bureau counted 24,099 Pakistanis in the city in 2000, although Asghar Choudhri, president of the Pakistani American Federation of New York, estimates there are upward of 200,000 Pakistanis in the five boroughs

More Pakistanis than any other nationality have been arrested amid the heightened scrutiny, and advocates for immigrants say the detentions have made many Pakistani New Yorkers fearful that a fateful knock on the door could come any time for them or a loved one.

Bullshit. In the first 10 months of FY 2002 (Oct 2001 - July 2002) the INS has apprehended 832,987 Mexicans, 8,691 Hondurans, 7,164 El Salvadorians, 6,786 Guatemalans, over 2,000 each from Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic. The INS has even apprehended more Columbians and Jamaicans.

Pakistan did not even make it into the top ten in apprehensions (they are #11). Now if they want to clarify their statement and say that “More Pakistanis than any other Muslim nationality have been arrested amid the heightened scrutiny”, then they would be correct.

A great post, futurlogic.

What I find tiresome are the 'immigrant advocates' who "say the detainees fit the profile of people like Ijaz, hard-working men whose only crime was they did not have proper immigration papers."

His ONLY crime? It is a very BIG crime to enter our country illegally.

And the work ethic thing just doesn't hold water anymore. There are 4.3 billion people living in poverty in the world, and most of them would like to come here to work hard.

I also wonder how it happened that our legal system has broken down to such a degree that a man who is here illegally can open a bank account and run a business.

The entire tone of this article - and of others by "mainstream" media sycophants for illegal aliens - basically comes down to one simple fact: nonwhite illegal aliens are supposed to be exempt from the law.

The U.S. is two nations - and not just in the Red-vs-Blue sense. It is one nation actually expected to obey the law "or else" - populated by European-Americans and blacks. And it is also another nation - in reality exempt from all tax, immigration, social-security, fake-ID, and traffic laws - populated by nonwhite illegal aliens.

"John Saxon's" essays - by a fed-up blue-collar Southerner, for people like him!
