From Roll Call:

The ballots have already been printed in New Jersey, and it's unclear how Torricelli would get have his named removed. One possibility would be for him to pull what one Democrat called the "living Carnahan," a reference to the election of the late Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan (D), who died three weeks before his Senate victory over now-Attorney General John Ashcroft. In that case, voters still voted for Carnahan, knowing the acting Democratic governor would appoint his wife, Jean Carnahan. In this case, Torricelli would either resign or announce his intention not to seek re-election but his name would still be on the ballot, with either Lautenberg or Menendez known as the stand-in to voters. If the fill-in were Lautenberg, he could tap his vast personal wealth to finance the campaign. GOP operatives vowed a "full-throttle legal challenge" to such a scenario Monday.

I KNEW I had a sick feeling in my stomach about this move today, but I couldn't figure out what they were up to.

I think you just nailed it, and I'm very very worried that this is exactly what they are up to.

It's too late to remove him from the ballot, but they saw it work for Carnahan, so why not now? And there are way too many Democrats in this state (I live in NJ) that would be tickled pink to vote for any other Democrat if they could now. This gives them the ability to vote for the Democrat without having to admit that they are willing to settle for a known crook over a Republican.

THIS STINKS!!!!!
