Governor and Senate Debates Coming Soon
Reporter: Chris Bundgaard
The November campaign for Governor and U.S. Senate turns to a heavy debate schedule next week.
Van Hilleary and Phil Bredesen will meet Monday and Tuesday in Gubernatorial debates. Also on Monday, Senate candidates Bob Clement and Lamar Alexander have their first debate, one that will be shown on TV across the country.
Senate candidates Lamar Alexander and Bob Clement haven't debated yet, but when they do Monday night in Chattanooga, there are plans to carry it live on C-SPAN. The race is one of those that could change the party controlling the U.S. Senate. The former Republican Tennessee governor often campaigns on what Clement victory means: "And that means no permanent tax cut, and no confirmation of conservative judges. The crowd that runs the senate is a crowd I would like to change, he'd like to add one more vote to it." said Alexander.
The Democratic congressman, who represents the Nashville area, sometimes likes to stay close to the president. He was just over Mr. Bush's left shoulder during a bipartisan meeting Thursday on Iraq. "I think most of us there wanted to be supportive and as helpful as we could, and I do think we will restrict the resolution."
Alexander said he doesn't mind his democratic opponent being seen with the fellow Republican president. "I think its good, maybe it will help him work on his voting record." And Clement is fond of saying this about voting records: "Lamar Alexander is going to vote with President Bush, Bob Clement with people of TN 100-percent of the time."
Hilleary and Bredesen meet Monday morning on Teddy Bart's Nashville radio show, and then Tuesday night during a televised Knoxville debate.
