Governor and Senate Debates Coming Soon

Reporter: Chris Bundgaard

The November campaign for Governor and U.S. Senate turns to a heavy debate schedule next week.

Van Hilleary and Phil Bredesen will meet Monday and Tuesday in Gubernatorial debates. Also on Monday, Senate candidates Bob Clement and Lamar Alexander have their first debate, one that will be shown on TV across the country.

Senate candidates Lamar Alexander and Bob Clement haven't debated yet, but when they do Monday night in Chattanooga, there are plans to carry it live on C-SPAN. The race is one of those that could change the party controlling the U.S. Senate. The former Republican Tennessee governor often campaigns on what Clement victory means: "And that means no permanent tax cut, and no confirmation of conservative judges. The crowd that runs the senate is a crowd I would like to change, he'd like to add one more vote to it." said Alexander.

The Democratic congressman, who represents the Nashville area, sometimes likes to stay close to the president. He was just over Mr. Bush's left shoulder during a bipartisan meeting Thursday on Iraq. "I think most of us there wanted to be supportive and as helpful as we could, and I do think we will restrict the resolution."

Alexander said he doesn't mind his democratic opponent being seen with the fellow Republican president. "I think its good, maybe it will help him work on his voting record." And Clement is fond of saying this about voting records: "Lamar Alexander is going to vote with President Bush, Bob Clement with people of TN 100-percent of the time."

Hilleary and Bredesen meet Monday morning on Teddy Bart's Nashville radio show, and then Tuesday night during a televised Knoxville debate.

I just got an interesting tid-bit of information from my Uncle who was a First Sergeant for the Memphis Branch of the Tennessee Air National Guard. He said that during the Viet Nam War there were there was a waiting list of potential guardsmen to the Memphis Branch of the TNANG and one had to wait to get a slot. Frank Clement, the former governor of Tennessee, sent Bob and his brother to the Memphis Branch and they were admitted into the TNANG without waiting in any line, they were immidiately joined by way of daddy. Many of the former members of the TNANG were displeased with this action because of the unfairness and the politics involved. Democrats have a short memory and it would be nice if someone pointed this little tid-bit out to a reporter for investigation (not that most reporters are democrat oriented and biased).

Would not surprise me. Governor Clement would probably be a conservative Republican today. He would have wanted his sons to appear as American defenders. Bob Clement was invited to switch parties in 1994 but declined.
