The Pro-South comedy 'Sweet Home Alabama' debuted last night with a take of close to 13 million which is slighly under the single day record of 13.3 million for 'Rush Hour' in Spetember.

Since Saturday Night is 'Date Night' expert expect that number to go up and the film to gross close to 40 million for the weekend making Resse Witherspoon second to Julia Roberts as a leading current female star.

A new affinty for films of the south or new star power of Genration X, or a combination of both..you make the call!

"Hollywood has been waiting for a long time for a young actresss with Box Office staying power..."

Another thing Reese has going for her is she is NOT RELATED to Goldie Hawn, Tom Hanks, etc., etc. She's become successful on her own! Glad to see her latest is such a hit!!

At least two "Cruel Intentions" stars seemingly couldn't care less what damage they're doing. Though Gellar tried to steer her young Buffy fans away from the picture, she told USA Today, "It's not a moviemaker's responsibility to teach moral lessons. We're storytellers."

Reese Witherspoon commented to Newsweek, "It is a very sexual climate in high school. This movie shows parents that this is where your kids are at."

Speaking of sexual climates, Witherspoon, whose character is a virgin for most of the film, told The New York Times that "one of the hardest things ... was to find a modern way to make a teenager a virgin. ... It actually was difficult to find a reason that wasn't self-righteous or obnoxious." That's right: To choose to remain chaste is now obnoxious.

It was 'highest grossing romantic comedy of all time-opening weekend' I think is the record..

I believe Reese was speaking about her CHARACTER not herself in 'Cruel Intentions.'

As I remember she plays the virgin in the Dangerous Liasons remake set in contemporary NY, and her character was an academic scholarship from Kansas admitted to the presitgious prep academy.

I saw Election and was lukewarm on it.

Well done but no redeeming characters or message. I really don't think of Reese as 'hot' but kind of cute in a younger sister sort of way.

Reese said she wanted to do a film where Southerners were not potrayed as evil or ignorant. My respect for her went up a lot.

I hope Neil Young remembers, a Southern Man don't need him around, anyhow!

That was the great untold Holywood secret. No young actresses except Cameron Diaz can carry a movie the first weekend, and you could probably say the same of the men except for Ben Affleck..

Judging by how young she is Reese now moves into the top 3 with Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts (who is on the downside of her career)

Looking at the promotional pictures, I think they were trying to make her look like Meg Ryans younger sister. The resemblance is startling!

I think her persistance is the ket to success. She doesn't strike me as the most beautiful or having the most magnetism, she picks good projects that fit her well.

You know the message I got out of it was that although everybody hates politicians, a wise man can follow their example and be nice to everybody.

Imagine if the teacher had only been courteous to the janitor... :o)

What does her mother being biracial (or not, Reese is pretty blonde) have to do with anything?

Maybe I wasn't concentrating hard enough during 'Election'..I still cant get over the 'Fill Me Up' scene with Reese and Matthew Broderick, it was all kind of downhill after that.
