Her grandpap was the biggest bigot north of Capetown.

It was worse than you think. In the late 30s Peter Lawford was working as a parking attendant at an exclusive Palm Beach restaurant. One of the restaurant's patrons spotted young Lawford speaking with a black guy and demanded that the restaurant fire Lawford for this "outrage." The patron who demanded the firing of Peter Lawford?---Why it was Joe Kennedy Sr., Lawford's future father-in-law. True story.

What year did Peter Lawford die? Can anybody recall? I know he had a 1950s series called "The Thin Man," about the fictitious Nick and Nora Charles. I think that was based on a Daschiel Hammett (I may have the name wrong.) novel.
