BERLIN (Reuters) - A Syrian man charged with celebrating the many deaths of the September 11 attacks on the United States went on trial in the German capital on Thursday.
The 34-year-old man is charged with attacking a Turkish salesman after demanding to know whether he was a Jew or an American and whether he approved of the attacks. The charges say a Palestinian man also participated in the attack.
The man's attorney said there was nothing political about the fight, one day after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon last year, adding that the Turkish man had lied about the incident.
Germany has been a focus of an investigation into those behind the September 11 attacks as three of the four lead plane hijackers whose actions killed more than 3,000 people lived and studied for years in the northern port city of Hamburg.
