The South Coast Air Quality Management District issued a smoke advisory for areas affected by the Williams Fire burning just north of Azusa in the Angeles National Forest."The fire itself is down on the front range of the mountains, and there's a strong atmospheric inversion," the AQMD's Sam Atwood said. "The smoke is trapped in our air basin."
The agency's smoke advisory urges residents, especially those with asthma, to stay indoors if possible or limit outdoor activities in the following areas:
- the east San Fernando Valley;
- the east, west and south San Gabriel Valley;
- Pomona/Walnut Valley;
- Norco/Corona;
- Metropolitan Riverside County; and
- northwest, southwest, central and east San Bernardino.
The AQMD's Sam Atwood, who lives about three miles from the Williams fire, said the air was thick with smoke near his home.
Linda Steinberg of the U.S. Forest Service also warned that small children, pets and the elderly need to stay inside.
"Keep the air conditioning running, and the doors and windows shut," Steinberg said. "It's thick and gray, and if you have asthma, it can cause problems."
Atwood said the levels for fine particulate are forecast to be a 165 on the agency's Air Quality Index. A level of 50 to 100 is considered moderate pollution.

Calif. Wildfires Prompt Evacuations
Wednesday, September 25, 2002

MOUNT BALDY VILLAGE, Calif. A wildfire that has destroyed dozens of cabins and forced the closure of 650,000-acres in Angeles National Forest prompted mandatory evacuations as smoke spread across communities northeast of Los Angeles.
The fire had scorched about 22,000 acres of the national forest by Wednesday morning, equal to about 11 square miles.
The fire was the larger of two big blazes in California. The other raced over 1,600 acres in a park south of San Jose, destroying 15 structures and threatening 50 homes.
The blaze northeast of Los Angeles more than doubled in size Tuesday. Some 2,000 firefighters were hampered by rugged terrain and temperatures that soared into the high 90s.
