A yearlong debate over what can be hung from freeway overpasses took another turn Monday when state highway officials announced that all displays -- including U.S. flags -- must come down.

The decision is an about-face from the stance the officials took earlier this month when they responded to a January court order by permitting all flags and banners on overcrossings.

This article comes a day after news that Davis signed an embryonic stem cell research bill. California is rapidly going down the toilet. It's becoming an intolerable place to live.

The day that I can leave this god-forsaken state will be the happiest day of my life.

Interesting issue. One problem is that a "10,000 dead" type of message is likely to be a great deal more distracting to drivers than an American flag.

Thanks Norm. Anyone following this issue knew it was brainless from the start.

Now if Davis can figure out how to legally place his campaign adds on the overpasses we're in for another reversal by Friday.

Keep in mind this policy of Cal-Trans applies only to flags or banners that are affixed to fencing or railings in a permanent manner. It does not apply to flags flown by individuals on a temporary basis. Yes, you can fly flags as long as it is an American flag or Calif. state flag only. You cannot display any other type of flag or banner. California wouldn't be in such a bind if the federal judge had not equated the flag with other forms of free speech that are narrow, parochial, and clearly political in nature. Let's hope this idiotic ruling is reversed on Oct. 9th.
