EBINO, Miyazaki -- A homeless man has been arrested after dropping a headstone over 6 meters onto traffic because he was annoyed at noisy cars that stopped him sleeping in a highway tunnel, police said Sunday.
A man who slammed his car into the headstone as it crashed into the Kitakyushu Expressway sustained minor injuries in the crash, but will recover in full.
Shunichiro Koyashiki, 47, unemployed of no fixed address but living in a highway tunnel for the past month, was arrested for breaking the law regarding highways and national roads. He admits to the allegations.
Noise from the cars traveling along the highway was driving me mad, so I hurled the headstone onto the highway as a type of revenge, he told the police.
Police said Koyashiki dropped the stone from a bridge across the highway down onto the road and into the oncoming early Friday morning traffic. He fled as the man crashed into the stone.
To steal the headstone, police said, Koyashiki went to a cemetery about 1 kilometer from where he had been staying. He then used a bulldozer in the cemetery to carry it to the bridge from where he hurled it.

"but living in a highway tunnel for the past month"
Matt Foley says he'd better "live in a van down by the river."

"Say, Shunichiro, that was some fancy bulldozer driving. You're pretty smart, were you a construction manager?"
"No, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Expressway last night."

I lived in Montpellier, France for a while. For some reason, there's a lot of homeless people that live there. Must be the warm climate or something. Anyway, there was this one bum that slept in the same doorway every night. Montpellier (the old city) is pedestrian, like Venice and you have to walk everywhere in the center. One night I and my wife were coming back from a pub and I guess talking too loudly as we passed this bum's sleeping spot and he got "raw" with us for disturbing his sleep. That guy always eyed me like I was the craziest person in the world after that...

Anyone ever wonder where the story or idea of Highway and Bridge Trolls came from?

I am speechless. This is so bizarre on so many levels, not the least of which is that you found this story in an obscure Japanese newspaper on a Sunday night.

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

The guy must have really "woke the dead" when he fired up the bulldozer in the middle of the night. It all sounds so hypocritical to me.

DRIVER: WHAT HAPPEN? Insurance claims adjuster: "So, you were just driving along when a headstone fell out of the sky and hit your car. Sure it did."

No jokes, please. This was a grave offense. Granite, but a little humor never hurt anyone.
