SEND A MESSAGE

Vote for Riley lets DeLay know he's on the wrong track

The movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn said movies were entertainment and messages should be sent by Western Union. The voters of the 22nd Congressional District southwest of Houston can send a much-needed message to Rep. Tom DeLay by casting their vote in the Nov. 5 general election for DeLay's opponent, Tim Riley.

A lawyer, Riley has deep roots in Texas and holds mainstream Democratic views. He supports development of commuter rail for the many residents of the district who work in Houston. If elected, Riley would make a prescription drug benefit for the elderly a priority.

Running an underfunded campaign, Riley faces an uphill battle to beat DeLay, an entrenched politician who, as House majority whip, is perhaps the third most powerful official in Washington. However, DeLay has given voters of both parties abundant reasons to reject his bid for re-election.

Thanks to DeLay, Houston is the only U.S. city forbidden to receive federal funds for rail transit. What would have been Houston's share went to Dallas and other cities, forcing Houston-area taxpayers to pay their own way.

While DeLay's opposition once stemmed from a loyalty to highway contractors who gave generously to his campaign, DeLay now seems to block rail for the sheer pleasure of punishing Houstonians.

The Chronicle's opposition to DeLay goes far beyond rail transit. DeLay also opposed President Bush's efforts to give every American child a decent education and leave no child behind. He has spoken disparagingly of distinguished research universities in Texas because they teach science that confounds his unyielding theology.

DeLay says that he wishes the U.S. government to embrace and promote a single religion above all others, and that government policy should reflect the beliefs of a single sect. The congressman finds irksome secular democracy of the type envisioned by the Founders.

While DeLay says he wants Houstonians to breathe clean air, he has relentlessly worked to excuse industries from any requirement that they limit the poison they put in the air. In public he pretends to support clean-air efforts, but works the back channels of the Capitol to thwart them.

DeLay says one thing to the general public and something else to religious groups who share his views. He rages if anyone points out the contradiction and hypocrisy.

Tom DeLay, who will become House majority leader and puppetmaster if Republicans retain control of the House, is obsessed with winning partisan advantage and husbanding personal power. His machinations make him incapable of working with opponents for the common good and subjugate the interests of Houston-area residents to his unbridled ambition.

The Chronicle urges Republicans and Democrats of the 22nd Congressional District to vote for Tim Riley on Nov. 5 and let DeLay know he is on the wrong track.

Nonsense BILGE from rabid Tom DeLay haters at the Houston Chronicle.

This is nothing new for them. They've averaged a monthly editorial smear on Tom DeLay for about 2 years straight now. When the Houston Comical is found in my yard I treat it the same as doggie poop. It goes into the garbage can without opening the wrapper that holds in the stink.

I have been trying to find out who was running against Tom DeLay for weeks. This guy Tim Riley is weak.

My respone to their bias (and I told them so as they continued to solict my business as a former subscriber) was to drop my subscription, laugh at them, and say that I don't need to get my information from a biased news source.

Riley's a carpetbagger who didn't even live in the district until after he won the Dem primary. The Chronicle's trying desparately to manufacture a credible candidate out of him.

Here's the latest story we did on it at HR...

The Comical brings up Tom Delay's opposition to the billion dollar rail project that the citizens of Harris County get to vote on next year (the I-10 toll road expansion payola).

I already know that I'm voting against the spending (don't know if that means I'm voting "YES" or "NO" until I see how it is worded ;)

TDOT has sure taken their sweet time restoring Houston's 70MPH signs. I don't want to see I-10 become a toll road. I don't want to see I-10 be hampered by 5 years of constructiondestruction and there will never be a plan to keep non-residents (visitors) out of cars because the $1.3billion in stadiums is paid for by hotel and car rental taxes. The grifters will never construct a rail from the airport to downtown because the cab ride in is $50 (they can take a city bus if they have a couple of hours to spare but there is stiff opposition to permitting airport shuttle vans from running people around).

Gotta love that soft sell. Second paragraph in and I already count 2 strikes against him!

He supports development of commuter rail for the many residents of the district who work in Houston.

Bait and switch. The commuter line that DeLay is opposing in along the I-10 corridor. Anyone consider Katy to be a part of southwest Houston?

None of the proposed rail lines (I-10 or Mayor Leepy Period Brown's Main Street Olympic Express Choo Choo) is in the district.

Wow. A newspaper supports a Democratic candidate. How unprecedented. How shocking. I can't believe my eyes. Stop the presses, this is front page material.

I immediately called all my friends when I saw this and they couldn't believe it either. The Doomsday Clock has been moved up two full minutes. Geese are flying backwards. Gold prices are skyrocketing.

An air raid siren just went off. I didn't even know we had an air raid siren in this town.

We used to have sirens that got tested at the beginning of every month. They ended the practice a couple of years ago.

They may have been used for storm warnings as well, maybe another Houstonian can clarify.

Half of this is distortion and 25% more is a lie.

I don't agree with the Congressman on where he gets his money, term limits and a couple of minor issues. I will however vote for him and believe him to be the second safest public official in Ft Bend County.

Tom DeLay, who will become House majority leader and puppetmaster

The only people who use "puppetmaster" when discussing politics are the fringe lunatics on both the left and right.

The Houston Chronicle has had a vendetta against Tom DeLay for years. Never mind that he's immensely popular in his District. He's frustrated the Chronicle's agenda, which is the same as that of Congressman who represents downtown Houston, Sheila Jackson-Lee.
