What freedom means to me ...

The Founding Fathers said all men are created equal, and that revolutionary notion has sustained America's democracy through thick and thin.

More than two centuries later, the country's resolve is being tested, but the idea that the United States is something special, because it is not organized around heredity or ethnicity or wealth, remains strong.

"How long the nation's new passion for patriotism will last remains unknown. But educators and The Modesto Bee hope to tap into that heightened interest with an upcoming lecture series and essay contest.

Modesto City Schools Superintendent Jim Enochs said the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001, convinced school officials that they must spend more time on civics, because too many people had been taking their freedoms for granted."

Megan Gowans, an American government teacher at Davis High School in Modesto, said it won't be easy for teen-agers to define what it means to be an American.

"There are a lot of them who see this as within their ability level," Gowans said. "They see it as a challenge, but not as an insurmountable one.""

Wow, I can't believe it. Is the educational system wising up? Teaching civics!
This could be a start of the right paths to better teachings of the USA.
