Mounting a spirited defense of his campaign fund raising and dismissing persistent allegations that his office is for sale, Gov. Gray Davis on Thursday said he has gone "the extra mile" to eliminate perceptions of corruption in the office.

"I go out of my way to let people know that my motivation is not financial gain, or any enhancement of my lifestyle," Davis said in a meeting with The Bee's Editorial Board. "My motivation is service. ... I have conducted myself in an appropriate fashion in accordance with the law, and I have no apologies for what I've done."

Cash-n-carry Davis using the old class warfare card again. Keep up the pressure, as this shows that Simon's "E-gray" campain is working. Anti-Davis sign suggestion:
"Simon Sez Vote Republican.
Davis sez Send Money, in Brown Paper Bag in Small Unmarked Bills."

Parsing of words = I sure as hell do sell my office to the highest bidder, then I cover it up so nobody PERCEIVES corruption in my office. Very Clintonesque

my motivation is not financial gain...

It's merely the naked pursuit of power.

"Why don't you go to bed with me?" Davis asked

Davis refuses to apologize for fundraising *style* [read: shakedown], eh?

Nothing new here.
Since when has a 'Rat "apologized" for anything??
Including (but certainly not limited to) dorking a governemnt employee *on* government property & time by our Chief Executive??
~& forget about the acts of treason by conspiring with our sworn ideological enemies which resulted in compromising the nation's defense, too.

We're comforably numb, I'm afraid.

The die for this & all the other outrageous, shameless behaviors were struck for the 'Rat Pack the moment this nation's "lawmakers" permitted Clintigula to skate away scot-free on any number of matters the leaker should've swung by neck, for doing.

Just another in a long line of Monkey-See, Monkey-Do legacies the 'Rats will enjoy for years to come, is all & I'd think we on the right would need to get used to it as a matter of survival.
The 'Rats -- as a whole -- are a stain on the nation that'll never be removed.

...nothing here, move along.

South said. "That means he's going to loan money to his campaign, he's going to get it back, then he's going to give it away, then he's going to get a tax deduction for the money he gave to his own campaign. Isn't that cute?"

I think it's "cute"! It means Simon will give another $9 million of his own money to charity, while Davis will give nothing.

You used the correct word: shakedown.

Davis is a shakedown artist in the best tradition of organized crime. The only difference between Gray Davis and a pimp is Davis is elected and dresses a little better.

Davis actually is semi correct. He is corrupt, it is not just for personal gain. He doesn't take $100,000 and stash it in the Cayman islands. He takes the $100,000 to sell his vote, in order to keep the money coming to run the perpetual campaign to keep himself in power.

I don't think anybody actually ever charged Davis with taking money to buy himself a yacht anyways. He is just a silly silly nimcompoop.

Well, I'll grant you the *elected* part.
Pimps tend to be rather colorful characters; as opposed to the Davis "Look" of battleship gray? {g}

My heart really goes out to our conservative brothers & sisters in the Golden State having to stand by & watch what the 'Rats have done to the state of their births.

I used to live in CA ("Susanville" in the north state) so I know something of one half, anyway.

...used to be such a beautiful, & special place.

"Aides said Simon also would not accept money from any donor with an interest in a bill before him at any point in the legislative year.

This is ridiculous. Every voter in the state has an interest in some bill or other. The taxpayers have an interest in all of them.

Fund raising style? I guess in California where every form of dubious conduct is known by the morally neutral term "lifestyle," Davis's smelly corruption is just another "style."

Can you say "shakedown"? Can you say "extortion"? Then you can say "Gray Davis". He's in the same boat as JJackson and the Reverend Al. And the sooner the people of Kalifornia realize it the better off the whole country will be.

Meanwhile... Back at the State government ranch...

Last night I talked to a government contractor that provides Internet Security services who informed me that CA has NO security against hackers whatsoever as evidenced by the recent stealing of State Employees Social Security numbers, enmass!

In fact, the State has shut down it's entire Department of Information Technology!!! Here in the home of Silicon Valley, we have absolutely no defense and no hope of any for the immediate future. We are the ONLY STATE in all 50 that is in this condition!!!

These stolen SS numbers leaves CALIFORNIA WIDE OPEN TO TERRORIST THREATS GALORE!!!

What is wrong with these Sacramento BEE ESS toadies in helping the worst Governor in CA HISTORY with this kind of CYA story? I don't think they really care about this State!!!

"I have done more than any sitting governor to bring unprecedented transparency to campaign contributions," Davis said. "I did that knowing that as the sitting governor I was the focus and would be the focus of attention. I thought transparency was a good thing. People could see who gave, what I did and make their own judgment."

"This topic needs to be its own thread. Have you emailed the information to any papers?"

1. There is no "article" to post to start a thread!

2. I have no "hard" info to email to them, just "hearsay" from someone in a position to know and their "opinion" of the situation. Plus I do not have that well informed individual's permission to involve him in such publicity that could "hurt" his enterprise and cause him to sue me if I act without said permission!

3. Immediacy of commentary on FR threads doesn't always allow for busy people to exercise every consideration of perfection in "manners" regarding interjections of semi-related "side issues" that add weight to the over-all devastation of Devastating Davis!

4. We all thought the devastation wrought by Willie Brown over decades was bad enough to ballotize "Term Limits!" Now, in under four years, that devastation has been dwarfed by Davis!!! (sorry, I know that deserves it's own thread, too.)
