Horse nappies (diapers) spark Vienna protest (ENVIROWACKO ALERT)
BBC News ^ | September 20, 2002 | BBC News

A plan to make horses wear nappies as they pull carriages through Vienna has animal rights protesters champing at the bit.

City officials have put forward the proposal in an attempt to stop horse droppings messing up Vienna's streets.

But animal rights activists donned nappies themselves and lined up in Heroes' Square in front of the former imperial Hofburg Palace to protest against the plan.

Drivers of the horse-drawn carriages - better known in Vienna as Fiaker - are also against the idea.

Of course. No one wants to change nappies if they don't have to. ;) - Ivan

Horse lovers say the nappies would inflict unnecessary suffering on the animals.

Clean-up teams

"The diapers would restrict the horses' movement and would rub, causing wounds," said Attila Cerman, who belongs to the group Four Paws which organised the protest.

I am certain the city would allow these strange people to run after the horses carrying baby powder and "Handi Wipes" - Ivan

To spell out their message, some of the activists stood in a row with their nappie-clad bottoms spelling "Stop Pooh Bags".

Protesters are urging city officials to find other ways to reduce horse mess, such as cutting back on carriages or employing more clean-up teams.

I posted this largely because I had a good laugh, but consider this as well - the same people who worry about horse's bottoms are likely the same ones who are not concerned about Saddam having weapons of mass destruction. Just goes to show sometimes a horse's arse is not always carried by an animal with four legs. ;)

Regards, Ivan

Do those carriage drivers have something against shovels and buckets? When I worked in an historic district the drivers just scooped, although the cleanup wasn't always easy on cobblestones. In fact, we'd go out and offer to take the road apples from the carriage drivers' horses and from the police horses in order to get the goods for our historic gardens. Excellent stuff once you let it rot in the mulch pile.

Don't they at least have a thriving muslim community around there to take the stuff off of everyone's routes in order to obtain supplies for a fertilizer bomb?

I'm sorry, I just can't picture the AB Eight-Clydesdale Hitch rigged out in these things.

Horse nappies are not a new idea!

I've even seen commercial designs for tidy suits for horses to wear out in pasture (which would last as long as it took for another horse to tear these things off)

Just because out elected leaders wear depends is not a good enough reason to make the horses wear them too.

A one finger salute to city hall.

Hey, the idiots in Memphis, Tennessee and New Orleans, La. Have already passed laws forcing carriage drivers to put these on horses. I have seen parade requirements that made these mandatory for horses.. Ridiculous.

Bay informs me that although he would prefer not to wear a diaper, he would do it if I asked him.

The pony gave me the finger just for asking.
