[history]
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon hoped last week's ruling setting aside a jury's fraud verdict against his family investment firm would clear his reputation, prompt a wave of fund-raising and get him off the defensive.
On Monday, however, Democratic Gov. Gray Davis launched a new attack against his opponent, using Simon's own campaign staff layoffs as well as selected business woes in a television ad accusing Simon of an antiworker mentality.

As a California Republican, all I have to say is that unless Bill Simon gets his ass in gear and starts acting like he really wants to be governor of California, which will require getting down in the trenches and being just as nasty as Davis, he might as well pack it up now. Election day is only 1 1/2 months away. Get a move on Bill - you are losing to a governor who has the popularity of Saddam Hussein.

"We've always said that we would talk not just about Bill Simon's failed business record but compare and contrast the candidates on the issues. But I'll bet they don't want to talk about Davis's failed record as Governor.
That's the issue.

Go Simon!
It's better than Hollywood!
It's real, honest to goodness
good against evil

Watch the Davis campaign descend further into the nether world of muck and slime during these last weeks before the election. They have to be furiously pummeling the focus groups in a last ditch effort to find any issue that will give them any traction at all.
Sorry guys, the public is on to you and there is nothing you can do about it.

I kind of have to agree with your assessment. The only way to beat Davis is to get down and dirty. Sad but true. Simon is such a sweetheart. Clark Kent needs to get into that phonebooth and come out as SUPERMAN!!! Go, Simon!!!!!!!

Let's get real. Even if I took a leave from my job and worked 80 hours a week for Simon, it would not make any difference. Leadership comes from the top, not the bottom. Simon's problem is Simon. He is the one who needs to grab the bull by the horns, and he needs to hire some sharp campaign and media experts. Even some of the long-time California Republican campaign consultants (guys who have been successful getting top Republicans elected in years past) have been critical of the calibre of people Simon has hired to run his campaing.
I am a Simon supporter and will vote for him. I voted for him in the primary. Right now, he has a golden opportunity. He needs to grap it and run with it.

Why does your response not surprise me?
Simon is quite active and engaged, if only you would pay attention. I'm able to tell that from three time zones away.

You can tell as much about the Simon campaign from 3 time zones away as I can tell about Elizabeth Dole's Senate campaign in North Carolina from 3 time zones away. Do you see the daily Davis and Simon TV ads from 3 time zones away? Do you see the California local TV news broadcasts from 3 times zones away? Do you get to read the Califonia newspapers from 3 time zones away? If you were able to see all of the above from your Virginia home, then I believe you would feel quite differently as to the caliber of the Simon campaign.

Do you get to read the Califonia newspapers from 3 time zones away? You betcha. And I see all sorts of ads compliments of the Internet. And I read Simon's campaign E-mails. (Do you?) And I see national TV reports and political analysis of the race. And I keep a spreadsheet of the polls.
So I'm quite in tune with what's going on out there, though I'm most assuredly at a geographical disadvantage. But what's sad is that I dare say I've done more for his campaign than you have.

TV ads are total losers, the only benefit to them is to line the pockets of "lazy campaign consultants".
