Why is it that most Europeans are so friendly and nice to Americans, while the Euro intellectuals and "elite" are so supercilious and nasty?
Part of it stems from fear. In a recent news interview of an Egyptian, who spoke for the radical muslims who are trying to kill as many Americans as possible, he said Europeans, including the UK, would not be attacked as long as they did not help America fight al Queda and its supporters.
Part of it results from World War II. The German people in 1940 were wanting living space and were crazy for Hitler. During the war they killed millions, including the murder of their own citizens. Then the Eastern half were crazy for Communism and the Western half learned how to be respectful to the U.S. and Britain. Now the entire country is crazy for green grass and clean air, and love furry little animals. They hate the idea of shooting anybody at all.
The French lost their war, cooperated with their conquerors, and went crazy for joy when the American army liberated them.
Italy fought alongside the Germans, badly, and now like to say they were freed by America.
Inside the European Union, these same countries now claim the right to tell America what it may and may not do in response to a series of attacks, the last one on its own soil, killing more Americans than the Japs did at Pearl Harbor.
Fear of the millions of muslims they imported to do the dirty jobs they don't want to do themselves? Envy of the country that victoriously ended the two World Wars they fought among themselves? Dislike of the country that has displaced them in leadership in technology, economics, science and government? Probably all these.
There have been terrible hurricanes, floods, fires, and earthquakes in the U.S. where thousands have been killed, injured, and made homeless. I never saw a French blanket or a German Mercedes truck or any Italian clothing sent over to help when these things happened. Nobody helped.
After World War II America created the Marshall Plan that put Europe back together, so that the saying got around that for a country to get rich, all it had to do was lose a war with America. It continues. Hundreds of tons of food and medical supplies went from the U.S. to Afghanistan, dropped even while bombs were falling, in order to limit as much as possible the suffering of civilians.
Even though America does not have to ask permission from anybody to respond to its enemies, it is offering cooperation with the U.N. By the way, the U.N. has been useless for the last eleven years in enforcing its own mandatory requirements on Iraq. It outdoes the old League of Nations in being completely ineffectual.
Pardon me if I am tired of having European elites acting like the Mafia, saying "I like your wealth. here is what we have decided you must do with it. I like your military power. Come over here and clean up our little Balkan problem that we have been incapable of handling for a couple of hundred years. Oh yes, and even though your factories are models of clean operation, you have to reduce your pollution still more, while undeveloped countries continue polluting at ten times your rate. After all, you are rich; it's only fair for you to become poor so that less capable people can become rich."
Prodi, Schroeder, Jospin... GROW UP!
Hell, I'd go visit Russia before Germany - even though I was stationed in Germany for three years. I don't think that Germany would be all that wonderful during the holidays this year. They'll be too busy trying to hide the fact that they used to be a Christian nation - in order to not offend their Muslim imports.
No, that's just the way Euros naturally look!

Not unlike the problem that Saudi Arabia now has.

How many Frenchmen and Germans come to America to visit their honored war dead?
