It would be nice to have a new UN resolution. However, if they fail to act, then they really are irrelevant, as the President stated this morning.

It depends what the resolution says. If it's a bunch of "if's", "buts" and "whereas's", forget it.

In the spirit of Winston Churchill.

The Security Council resolutions will be enforced -- the just demands of peace and security will be met -- or action will be unavoidable. And a regime that has lost its legitimacy will also lose its power.

It was an amazing speech, very powerful, very covincing. One of his best.

There is an interesting overview of Dubya's speech at the Boston Globe:

Interesting article

It says, among other things, that Powell is supposed to meet with Security Council members on FRIDAY to come up with a DEADLINE for Saddam. Some on on FOX earlier was saying that the time going around right now is 3 weeks.

Dianne FineStain just said she would vote no if the vote was on unilateral action. Both she and Byron Dorgan earlier, seem to have heard a different speech. They praised Bush for calling on the UN to resume inspections.

Daschle said earlier he isn't convinced a strike on Iraq is necessary.

I don't recall hearing ANYTHING about resumption of inspections.

Speech was great. Iraq will not likely comply with any conditions.

US Demands from Iraq

1. Immediately and unconditionally forswear, disclose, and remove or destroy all weapons of mass destruction, long-range missiles, and all related material.

2. Immediately end all support for terrorism and act to suppress it.

3. Cease persecution of its civilian population, including Shi'a, Sunnis, Kurds, Turkomans, and others.

4. Release or account for all Gulf War personnel whose fate is still unknown. It will return the remains of any who are deceased, return stolen property, accept liability for losses resulting from the invasion of Kuwait.

5. Immediately end all illicit trade outside the oil-for-food program. It will accept U.N. administration of funds from that program, to ensure that the money is used fairly and promptly for the benefit of the Iraqi people.

But the purposes of the United States should not be doubted. The Security Council resolutions will be enforced -- the just demands of peace and security will be met -- or action will be unavoidable. And a regime that has lost its legitimacy will also lose its power.

--------------------------------------------------

The United Nation cannot vote to declare that Security Countil resolutions should not be enforced. This is brilliant. President Bush is using the UN resolutions against the UN.

I noticed the significance of the UNESCO move, but figure it'll get lost in all the Iraq shuffle.

Kofi Annan didn't particularly like President Bush's speech....neither did Sadaam Hussein, Chirac, Fahd and Arafat......do these count? Is it legal to cut the balls off Kofi Annan for pretending to have any relationship at all to the brave and independent people who defeated NAZI ( socialist) Germany and Imperialist Japan in WW II . Someone please advise me on the legalities as the wish is already present. Thank you.

Has anyone heard any negative reactions?

Predictably, the heads of the cretins over at DU are about to explode.

I think it was a great speech. He also did not box himself in by giving a date. Tom Dashole was his usual self which is a total disgrace. Parley

"Dianne FineStain just said she would vote no if the vote was on unilateral action. Both she and Byron Dorgan earlier, seem to have heard a different speech."

By the time the Evening Newscasts roll around, the story will NOT be President Bush's speech to the UN, but DEMOCRATIC CRITICS' REACTION to the speech. Peter Jennings will make no mention of how stellar he'd earlier pronounced the speech, and the news editors will show Dubya in slow-mo in an attempt to make him look retarded. By the end of the broadcast, you will be made to believe that Tommy Daschle addressed the UN, not our President.

Only on FOX will the critics' reactions be labeled "predictable."

Tom Dashole is such a hypocrite, I can't believe more people haven't brought up the points noted in this article:

"...the time going around right now is 3 weeks."

That'd be 3 October...yet the Vast, LeftWing Medyuh Whore'd continues to state that no action will be taken before next January or February.

I believe the earlier date is more likely to be accurate...MUD
