I've heard, too, that since SD is a small population state (only in the 100,000s), personal contact and constituent service can have a huge impact on the vote, and Daschle makes the most of it.

I've heard that about him. Seems to me though that Daschle has always been vulnerable to a strong GOP candidate and that his survival to date is more attributable to having the good fortune of running against weak candidates than bringing back pork.
