Kind of reminds me of the bubble memory stuff HP was working on a decade ago... What ever happened to that?

Seems to me I have read about it being used a lot more than we might think in very specialised applications (mostly military and hardened)

That sounds about right - it was very robust. The big problem was that it was too slow for standard commercial applications.
