Augusta Pig Scramble Set for Saturday

The simple pleasures afforded by Garland’s little country fair last week-end provides a down-to-earth reminder that when government becomes too bloated, it’s time for a pig scramble. That’s exactly what is planned for next Saturday in Augusta.
Youngsters eager to catch a pig were given burlap sacks Sunday afternoon and it didn’t take long for the little porkers to have new homes.
Saturday’s Billion Dollar March is planned for September 14th at 10 a.m. in the State House complex on the piece of land once occupied by the Department of Education (between the State Library and the State Office Building.) The taxpayers going to Augusta on Saturday will be adults after the prize of bagging the government pig by reducing the taxes and spending of Maine state government.
Although the Governor doesn’t seem to see his job as hog farmer, what else can you call it? Too many people are feeding from the state trough. The growth of government has been historic during his time in office.
In today’s Portland Press Herald story titled Governor denies state living beyond means, reporter Paul Carrier writes “In fiscal 1996, which was the first full year under King's watch, General Fund spending was almost $1.7 billion, according to the Legislature's budget office. That compares to a projected $2.7 billion this fiscal year.”
But the Billion Dollar March isn’t just about that billion dollars. It’s about the nearly billion dollar projected overspending of revenues for the next two year budget!
Although the Garland pig scramble was fun for the kids and the audience, one particular pig started screaming as soon as it was brought into the arena…even before the kids went after him.
Likewise, whatever comes out of the Billion Dollar March on Augusta, be prepared for bureaucrats, special interests and some politicians to start screaming bloody murder at the thought of any cost cutting/tax reduction solutions to Maine’s #1 state/local tax burden.
Bagging the pig won’t be easy, but if we work together it can be done. Let’s remember to have some fun doing it.

Maine, quite often, can be more southern than Georgia . They don't call them Maniacs for nothing.
