Road Workers Paint Over Dead Badger (with pics)
The Sun (U.K.) ^ | September 10, 2002 | JOHN COLES

Posted on 09/09/2002 7:10:35 PM PDT by Shermy

LAZY road workers painted a white line straight over a dead badger. The animal’s body was lying by the side of a main road as the new lines were being marked out.

Instead of moving it, workers painted a white stripe over its back.

Passer-by Chris Crab-tree took these photos of the callous act on the A361 near Frome, Somerset. The salesman, 58, said: “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

“I had driven over the county border into Somerset when I noticed it.

“They had painted over the badger where it lay.”

The dad of four, of Congresbury, added: “I don’t know if they didn’t notice it, although they’re big enough animals.

“Perhaps they couldn’t be bothered to move it.”

Somerset council had given the marking job to a private contractor.

A spokesman said: “This is totally unacceptable and we will be asking for an explanation.”

A month ago we told how workmen painted yellow lines around a traffic cone in Huddersfield, West Yorks.

Before road workers paint a line on a road, shouldn't they clear it of anything (living, formerly-living, or never-living) that isn't permantly there, since such objects will otherwise result in unpainted areas of the road beneath?

I dunno about over there, but in my neck of the woods, we don't hire road painters based on their educational background. We hire them to paint in straight lines.

If we don't tell them to move dead badgers, well...

"I would like to feed your fingertips to the badgers."

"I'm sorry. We are all out of badgers. Would you accept a wolverine in its place?"

I love that one because they thought for a second about going around it, but then decided against it.

"...callous act..."

This southerner wonders how one would show the proper sensitivity for a dead badger. Apparently they are more dignified than possums.

Pick him up, put him in a box, let him lay in state for a few days followed by a full state funeral. That, and compensation for the badger's family should be in order.
