The Times' contract with the professional hockey team renames the Ice Palace to the St. Pete Times Forum. The arena is in Tampa, across Tampa Bay from St. Petersburg on Florida's Gulf Coast.

There is an irony here.

I was on the Florida Gulf Coast during Spring training and was amazed at the distinction between St. Pete, which is where the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are housed in what is the worst stadium south of Montreal, and Tampa -- which is the Yankees' Spring training home.

St. Pete has a lukewarm attitude toward the D-Rays, who hardly inspire enthusiasm. But cross the causeway and Tampa doesn't seem to even know the D-Rays even exist! All the media and merchandising is oriented toward the Yankees, instead.

The sad sack D-Rays can't even get the attention, much less the respect, of half their market.

And to think they fought for years and years to get that (Florida Suncoast Dome, Thunder Dome, Tropicana Field) monstrosity built. You'd think after all those hassels there would be a bit more pride ehh ?
