The last of three men who admitted they branded a neighbor with a hot metal spatula after learning the neighbor had been sodomizing small boys was sentenced to a year in the county jail and five years' probation.

William Hatten, 41, of Pontiac stood silently, clasping his hands, as his attorney, Amy Bowen-Krane, told Oakland County Circuit Judge Nanci Grant her client had "deep regrets" for attacking Philip Gibson in his Pontiac home in November 2000.

Oakland County Assistant Prosecutor Ken Frazee said remorse was not enough

Ken Frazee's sons and/or grandsons need to spend some quality time with Philip Gibson, in order to help Frazee understand how insane his rabid, drooling pronouncements about "justice" sound to normal people.

Well, if they're serving time for the crime, I hope they did a good job of it with the branding.

There is no way that this child molester can hide these brands, either in prison or if he was released back into society. Branding used to be a common practice for a wide variety of crimes.

In the Mexican war of 1848, a few hundred Catholics deserted the US Army to serve with the Mexicans. When they were captured it was thought that death was the only possible punishment. General Winfield Scott, in accordance with military law, was responsible for sentencing. Many were shot or hung. The vast majority of defendants were branded with a "D" on their cheek (face)and released to return to the USA. This was not considered "cruel and unusual punishment" but rather an act of mercy.

It appears to me that these guys should have kept their mouths shut and asked for a jury trial. Even if found guilty, a slap on the wrist would have been sufficient.

Why would any jury convict these men, unless it was upset that they let the scumbag live. They should have put the spatula where the sun don't shine.
