But then again, this comes from a state where certain sexual fetishes call for inserting one of these animals into your partner (where things normally exit) for pleasure - and that's NOT A CRIME???? That shows just how far off the scale things have gotten there.

I wonder that too. Suppose he'd killed a rabbit, an animal that many people eat? Would he get off in that case? Is it okay to kill an animal to eat but if you don't plan to eat it you get three years in jail?
