Jon Delano never seems to go away. When I was growing up, he worked for Dem. Congressman Doug Walgren, who represented my district before being beaten by newcomer (now Senator) Rick Santorum in 1990. Delano would stand outside the local Giant Eagle supermarket, wearing the funny straw hat favored by convention attendees, and passing out Walgren literature. The district was very Republican for many years, yet kept putting Doug Walgren back in for ages. When he lost to Santorum, Walgren said that it was a matter of time before he lost, being in a Republican district...sort of like delayed gerrymandering.

Ironically, Santorum was nearly gerrymandered out of office after his first term when the Mon Valley (big steel heavily unionized area) was added to his district. The main reason he won reelection in hostile territory in 1992 was that the Dems had seven candidates in the primary. Six labourites were defeated by a recently converted RINO who lost in an upset because the union folks didn't have anyone to feel enthusiastic about. If Rick hadn't run for Senate (and won) in 1994, he likely would have lost his Congressional seat at the polls.

Delano, meanwhile, ran at least once for either State Rep or State Senator and lost, but he seems to be doing just fine dividing his time between media and academia. Just wish he'd shut up, though...

Actually, Delano was in that very crowded Dem primary in the 18th Congressional district and lost. I know he used to work for Walgren; glad to have been part of the movement that sent him packing back to VA!

Delano pops up just about everywhere: academia, onQ, KDKA, etc... Always comes across nice, but he is a smart guy and never lets an opportunity go by to push the Dem cause. He usually does not take swipes at Republicans, and is subtle, and that works for him. But he is a Dem - no doubt.
