Sweden's links to radical Islam
Times Online ^ | Augustus 30 2002 | Roger Boyes

The man charged with attempting to hijack a Ryanair jet yesterday is Swedish born, but has Tunisian parents. Roger Boyes, charts the country's links to extreme Muslims.

The number of radical Muslims in Sweden has been growing rapidly because of the country's relatively liberal asylum laws, according to police reports.

Although few of al-Qaeda's European links lead to Scandinavia, Sweden is the home of one of the most virulent Islamic voices against Israel: the Moroccan-born Ahmed Rami.

Mr Rami received political asylum in Sweden in 1973 after claiming to have taken part in an unsuccessful military coup against King Hassan II of Morocco.

Since 1987, to the embarrassment of the Swedes, he has run Radio Islam and has become a firm fixture in the international far-right community.

He has taken part in conferences questioning the voracity of the Holocaust - including one "revisionist" forum organised by British historian David Irving - and maintains regular links with German and American neo-Nazis.

The Swedish authorities withdrew his radio licence for a year in 1990 after he was found guilty of broadcasting anti-Semitic and racist material.

A group of like-minded Muslim radicals has sprung up around Mr Rami but they are mainly long-term residents who have taken Swedish citizenship.

Police were unable today to say whether the suspected hijacker was part of Mr Rami's circle. Mr Rami tours Arab states on the lecture circuit; his main audience appears to be in Iran where he has delivered university talks on the Israel lobby and the Holocaust.

There are 250,000 Muslims living in Sweden - it ranks as the country's second largest organised religion after Protestantism - and many dissident groups operate on the fringes of religious communities.

Danish authorities have been concerned for some time about the Swedish Islamic community, Denmark has tightened its own immigration and asylum rules in order to filter Muslim refugees travelling between the two countries. Since most of the Muslims have Swedish citizenship however, there is little that can be done in terms of monitoring their movements.

McVeigh wasn't a practicing Christian; it wasn't religion which motivated him. So, it appears you're barking up the wrong tree here and cannot blame all religions equally for the tendencies of some.

As the 9/11 actions had nothing to do with the Muslim religion.

You're a nitwit and a shameless liar. Why don't you save your BS for your Lefty friends who are as stupid as yourself?

He was given absolution for his acts - that is the tenet of the Catholic church - no moral equivalence here - just the simple proof that the man - regardless of his life and deeds - if sincere ( and I can't imagine anyone in his predicament not being) died a Christian and was forgiven for his crimes by his God -

Once again, you try the moral equivalence. If McVeigh needs absolution to get into Heaven, that means he did something WRONG according to the Chrisitian faith. Mohammed Atta is assured by his faith that he committed a RIGHTEOUS act in killing "infidels", and is guaranteed 72 virgins to defile at his whim in the hereafter as a reward. (And isn't it interesting that they consider this a Divine perk? Does that encourage or discourage defiling virgins down here on earth?)

There are HUGE differences in the civility, righteousness, tolerance, and global compatibility of these two religions.

A thrust - and a score - sir.

I have no reparte' for your statement and will consider this as a learned point in weighting future arguments.
Well done.

I would like to know what kind of religion pictures heaven as a place where a bunch of filthy, lecherous men defile innocent virgins with their filthy attentions into Eternity.

>>>Replace that with "US links to radical Christianity" and you could talk about McVey<<<

<>McVey. Wasn't it OuiMcVey that did the Oklahoma Murrah Building bombing? That's right; I remember now, a radical Jewish sect was responsible.<>

"Let's hope the prosecutors there get to the bottom of this once and for all.

That's My Word."

Excellent points - but as was said - the only man who can really answer all this is long gone - though I for one believe that if he were still alive - he would talk at some point opting to no longer bite his tounge for what his compatriots were doing.
