Do you know if there was a bathroom window?
Guess we do not always know what we will do when the tragic and unexpected occurs. . .perhaps a good example here to remind us to think about what we might do in case of fire. . .whatever the origins.

I seem to recall that there was no window in that bathroom. Although I had imbibed a fair amount at the time, I am fairly certain of my recollection.
My inclination is to either agree with SarahW, in supposing that he was burned by the initial ignition and he rushed to the bathroom, where he was overcome by smoke or he rushed to the bathroom to find a container for water and was overcome by smoke.
Either way, I still think that there is way too much that is consistent with arson than accident.
