"While visiting the west coast this week, I saw the destructive effects of one of the worst wildfire seasons in history," Bush said in his weekly radio address.
"As we work to put out the fires and bring relief to their victims, we also have a responsibility to prevent the devastation that can be caused by future fires," he added.
Bush said U.S. forest policy needed to focus on thinning out trees to reduce the incidence and damage from wildfires. He characterized the current U.S. forest policy as a, "hands-off approach" that was "devastating to our environment."

Whats New in Zone 1:
The Southwest Area Incident Management Team will transition with Mike Morcoms Blue Mountain Interagency Incident Management Team today. This will be the final update from the Southwest Area Team. Unified Commanders Lee Oman, Van Bateman and Dan Oltrogge wish to express their sincere appreciation for the support provided by the Illinois Valley and Galice communities.
All fire containment lines in Zone 1 are holding. Crews and resources are being released or relocated where additional firefighters are needed. Rehabilitation on containment lines and other impacted areas continues.
Rainie Falls Trail re-opened at 12:01 am this morning, August 24th for day hiking only, camping continues to be prohibited. The Rogue River Trail and Kelsey Pack Trail will remain closed. The status of these areas will be assessed Monday, August 26th based on fire conditions
Location: Zone 1 of the Biscuit Fire is east of a line running south from Silver Peak to the Oregon-California border, encompassing the majority of the north flank of the fire.

Structures Threatened: 274 Residences, 0 Commercial Properties, and 0 Outbuildings
Structures Destroyed: 4 Residences, 9 Outbuildings
