WARSAW, Ky.- A knife-wielding man attacked a mother and her three children in their home Friday, killing two of the children and injuring the woman and the other child, authorities said.
A suspect was captured in West Virginia, police said.
The attack happened sometime around 6 a.m., according to state police Sgt. John Bradley.
Police identified the slain children as Cody Sharon, 6, and his sister Chelbi, 7. Their mother, Carolyn Marksberry, was in critical but stable condition at the University of Cincinnati Hospital. Ten-year-old Courtney Sharon was in fair condition at Cincinnati's Children's Hospital.
Marco Chapman, 30, was taken into custody early Friday afternoon in Shrewsbury, W.Va., and charged with murder, first-degree assault and burglary. He was described by authorities as an acquaintance of Marksberry, but the motive for the attack remained under investigation, police said.
Police had distributed a description of a truck Chapman was driving, and he was apprehended without incident, Bradley said.
Marksberry had been appointed city clerk in this Ohio River town earlier this month, Mayor E. Richard Wood said.
Alberta Allphin, a fellow city hall employee, said the three children had attended Allphin's Sunday school classes.
"No inkling or word would suggest that anything like this could happen," she said.
Marksberry's husband, Charles, was in Spain for job training and was heading home, said Susan Poling, a spokeswoman for the steel producer he works for, North American Stainless.
In a sense, these are more victims of the liberals war against reality. I read on another thread of a woman in Boulder, Co, who thought that it would be better to be raped and killed than to kill someone in self defense. That is the essential "modern liberal" attitude. I wish I could have trained this young mother in the defensive use of arms before it was to late.
