Leads me to think that the victim may have been black. Black mothers almost always refer to their offspring, even after they're grow up to be adults, as "my babies."

Not that it matters, but this crime of violence may have had denigration as a motive.

I have called my grandbabies my grandbabies.. It's a southern thing. I remember one day the youngest one said, " Our other grandma calls us her grand children." I just told her that was okay, her other grandmother was from California and they talk funny..
