LONDON — Libya has signed a $13.5 billion weapons deal with Iran for ballistic missiles with chemical warheads and the training to deploy and operate them.
The Berlin-based Die Welt daily reported that Iran and Libya signed the accord in June 2002. Western intelligence sources said the deal was meant to bolster Libya's missile and weapons of mass destruction programs.
Iran pledged to train Libya in missiles and the production and use of chemical weapons. Under the contract, Libya would obtain chemical warheads for its extended-range Scud-class missiles.

Libya has become a bit of "wild card" in this game. But it makes absolutely no sense that Ghaddafi (sp) would want to use these weapons against us. He has been trying way too hard lately to rejoin the "community of nations". He's hammered out a deal with the EU/Lockerbie victims and he has actually been quite outspoken against the 9/11 attacks and radical Islam.
These missiles have a finite value- their range. Ghaddafi wants Africa. We would likely not intervene if he were to make some power play on one of his neighbors. Why would we? We have no strategic interest in Northern Africa in the sense that we do in the Middle East.
I picture Libya going after the North African Coast. Morrocco, Algeria- eventually Egypt. Then heading south. Or vice versa. There's a lot of riches to the south. Ghaddafi is way too ambitious to make a second typical Arab blunder of using the missiles to threaten us or our interests- in the present.
That's just me though.

Ghaddafi is making a power play here. A smart one too. He'll wind up with a major stake in subSaharan Africa without the necessity of military invasion. I don't pretend to really know what he's up to- but what is certain is- he's up to something.

A Libyan nation armed with IRBMs or SRBMs is a direct threat to the "soft underbelly of Europe". Remember that we used the shores of Tripoli as a staging point for the southern invasion of "Fortress Europe" during World War II. Too bad most Euro-weenie diplomats can't see this potential threat due to their overwhelming desire to obtain Libyan oil contracts.
Also, If Libya was to get its hands on a fraction of Iran's stockpile of Chinese produced anti-ship missiles, shipping in the Med would SERIOUSLY impaired. The presence of these missiles would greatly impinge our naval fleet to operate in the region until all launchers are eradicated.
The Iranian ASM missile threat was significant during the Gulf War however, their capabilities have increased significantly due to their involvement with the Chinese. Thank-you very little mr. Clinton. Again, this fact is being accounted for by our war-planners for the 2nd Gulf War.

I don't want to argue that point with you. But I, personally, would reword that to say "Africa HAD the potential to be even wealthier than America..."
What opportunity they had has been squandered. They didn't take well to colonization- largely the fault of Marxist instigation (IMHO). But at any rate, they didn't jump on the Industrial Age or the Information Age train. They didn't realize it wasn't a subway train that comes back to their stop same time next year. We, the West, have taken a one way train at the speed of thought out of our old dominion. We are the masters of the Earth now and any of those that look wistfully down the tracks, well, they missed out- the train ain't coming back.
It will be another 3 or 4 decades before the African people themselves will be able to derive true wealth from their own resources (ie- not simply selling them to someone, but using them to create wealth). By then, where will we be? We'll have intelligent computers by then. The African will be trying to compete on the level of Ben Franklin (if that) in the year 2040 and the average American will have more power than any Pharaoh ever did. Our success is feeding on itself now. Our growth starts to reach exponential levels. The African, the Madrassah schooled Arab- these people are only going to be left exponentially behind. What will happen is, before they can exploit their own resources for their own betterment, the West will come in like Gods and take away every reason they had at improvement or we will invent a technology that renders every resource they have moot. Then what will they do?
The downfall for the lefties is in this fact. Nothing they can do at this point will better the African's situation. They are only helping him in his misery. In their tacit support of Mugabe, Mandela, Mbeki- they are simply retarding an already retarded culture more. I lived in Africa. I don't want to sound racist here. I really enjoyed Africa and I dream of going back. But even I, here in Great Britain, look wistfully at the nation of my birth and see how much further along the USA is than my adopted country. I will have to come home one day or live in an increasingly nostalgic and insignificant world.
