FBI Seeks New 9/11 Suspect

Tue Aug 20,11:31 PM ET

By JOHN SOLOMON, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nearly a year after the Sept. 11 attacks, the FBI ( news - web sites) issued a worldwide bulletin Tuesday night seeking the arrest of a Saudi man newly identified as a suspected associate of the hijackers.

The bulletin issued to law enforcement across the globe sought the immediate arrest of Saud A.S. al-Rasheed, 21, of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The FBI said the sudden bulletin was based on information developed over the last few days, and it warned police al-Rasheed should be considered armed and dangerous.

"On Aug. 15, 2002, material previously recovered during the war on terrorism were found to be related to several of the Sept. 11 hijackers," the FBI said.

The materials included an image of a Saudi Arabian passport belonging to al-Rasheed which had been issued in Riyadh in May 2000. "Al-Rasheed's current whereabouts are unknown," the FBI bulletin said.

Al-Rasheed is suspected to be associated with the September 11, 2001 hijackers," the bulletin said.

Two senior law enforcement officials, who spoke only on condition of anonymity, said Tuesday night that al-Rasheed's picture was found among pictures of several hijackers in materials obtained overseas some time ago and recently reviewed at the FBI. The materials were included on a computer CD-ROM, the officials said.

The officials said they did not know how long the government possessed the information before making the discovery but said the bulletin was issued out of an abundance of caution.

Several government officials said the FBI doesn't believe al-Rasheed is in the United States at the present time. Law enforcement agencies overseas were advised to contact the local U.S. embassy if they have information regarding his whereabouts.

A senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that from the information the FBI reviewed last week, "they were able to take this piece of information and it showed clear signals or lines that he was connected to 9/11."

A picture of al-Rasheed was posted on the FBI Web site Tuesday night at http: www.fbi.gov.

The bureau has on occasion issued alerts over the last year, but most have involved new terrorist threats and not suspected associates of the hijackers whose activities have been exhaustively investigated over the last 11 months.

For instance, in February the FBI issued a warning during the start of the Winter Olympics ( news - web sites) in Salt Lake City asking law enforcement and the American public to be on the lookout for a Yemeni man and several associates who might be plotting a terrorist attack within days.

The FBI scrambled to put that warning out after information emerged that one or more people were involved. Officials said the intelligence, while deemed credible, was not specific about possible targets.

That alert identified one possible attacker as Fawaz Yahya al-Rabeei, a Yemeni citizen born in Saudi Arabia in 1979. It listed about a dozen associates of al-Rabeei, most from Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

The more I know about the saudis the more I despise them. We have got to find a way to make them go back to "eating their dates under the palms."

Seems like the boys in San Quentin would happily volunteer to help him adjust to prison life...

Another Saudi. There's a big frickin' surprise.

What is it now, 20 out of 21 of the 9-11 terrorists are ID'd as Saudi's. Just based on THAT fact, we should conquer their pissant country, confiscate their oil, and execute their government (officials, of course).

He obviously is guilty of stealing tablecloths from Italian restaurants and using them as headgear.

What a sick SOB.

I see we have more of that famous Saudi cooperation. I'd say the 21-year-old man we're supposedly looking for has changed a lot in appearance since he was ten...

And that suggests to me he may be pretty high up in the terrorism food chain--they've been very careful to see that there are no pictures which could be used to identify him...He's been training a long time.

I believe it's the al-Rasheed Trust that funded (probably still does) the operations in Afghanistan. I seem to remember something about Pearl being kept on the land that the Trust held. I have no idea how common the name is or if they're connected; but giving us a picture of a ten year old kid when we're looking for a grown man makes me think someone's been careful to make sure there would be no pictures to identify him...

I agree… I've been thinking since first seeing this photo (on FOX) that there's no way this is a 21-year-old. Looks like maybe low 9 to tops 15, given the effeministic characteristics.

...of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia...

I can already hear Ari Fleisher describing this development as "disturbing", but maintaining that Saudi Arabia is our "close partner" in the war against terrorism.

We will find out in short order if the Saudi's are with us, or with the terrorists. They should already be talking to his friends and family in Riyadh and getting their foreign embassies on alert.

Seems like most of the 'Saudis' seem to be born Yemenis, as was bin Laden. Evidently there is some reason for this. Why are Yemeni-born Saudis apparently more radical?

Or my mistake, bin Laden's DAD was Yemeni-born. Seems like the most radical clerics are Yemeni-born too.

I could be wrong, but I suspect it has a lot to do with geography, as well as geopolitics. Yemen has always been more isolated from other cultural influences than Saudi.
