I think he's got a definable mental illness-namely something in the "psychosis" line. But you're right; the insanity defense isn't going to work. Being insane and mentally ill aren't synonymous.
I would have thought his attorney would try to plea bargain.

I grew up in a N Wi. rural area and still live "out in the country"...every morning parents send their kids down driveways to wait for the school bus..I see them carrying their backpacks and letters to put in mailboxes at the end of those driveways...

Exactly. They're never going to be able to prove that he could not tell right from wrong and could not control his actions (legally insane), when his actions and his letters prove otherwise. He's toast. He'll be totally gray-haired by the time he gets out of jail, there are too many charges against him in too many states.
Going for the insanity plea is really all the defense attorney could do, though.
