CAPTION THIS: Rev. Jesse Jackson comments on Gov. Jeb Bush's new DCF Chief

From the Associated Press, Aug. 18, 2002:
The Rev. Jesse Jackson and other Democrats blasted Gov. Jeb Bush's nominee for child welfare chief Saturday, saying he should be fired for his ties to a paper that promotes spanking and demeans women.
The Democrats said Bush either failed to check Regier's background or that he must agree with a paper published in 1989 that endorses spanking that causes bruises and welts and says that married women shouldn't have careers. The paper lists Regier on the cover as co-chairman of the group that authored it.
"In some sense, Mr. Regier is an extension of Mr. Bush's ideology," Jackson said. "These are his convictions and that's why he's going to stand by him."

Rev. Jesse Jackson:
"First, of all, let me say that I was unaware of
the vetting process done by Gov. Bush, as well as
Mr. Regier's online denial statement, claiming he was
not a 'co-author' and had 'no editorial control,' as none of the FL newspapers I saw bothered to publish Mr. Regier's response.
Nor did I know the religious group behind this decades old essay claims Mr. Regier attended only one meeting 13 years ago, and then disassociated himself with their group a year later, as
reported in the St. Pete Times.
Second, I was also unaware of the fact
Mr. Regier was recently recognized and honored for his outstanding work in this area.
Third, I still am amazed an
independent commission -- headed by one of Gov. Bush's loudest critics, a black bishop in FL -- now supports Gov. Bush's One Florida program.
Fourth, I did not know FL voters
recognize Gov. Bush as a leading advocate for children, and they realize the current Dem sniping about the new DCF chief is
not helping FL's children.
Consequently, as a leader genuinely interested in children (in fact, I fathered another one out of wedlock)
I am here today to rise above partisian politics, and to support Gov. Bush's choice to lead the DCF. And, most importantly, to say to all of FL's independent and swing voters that:
'Yes, the Dem Party DOES care more about kids than about making a basless attack on Gov. Bush.'
In short, I'd like to extend
a warm welcome to Mr. Regier, and to commend Gov. Bush for acting swiftly and finding an outstanding administrator to lead FL DCF.
Now that I know additional facts, I realize Gov. Bush made a FANTASTIC appointment in Mr. Rieger -- and, that's why you see the sign here saying Bush deserves an 'F' - for FANTASIC."
