how likely is it that anyone (let alone a relatively intelligent person) would "stop his car on the bridge and get out to look" ?

Your life has obviously been bereft of the many rich experiences to be gained through close association with the sort of top notch minds involved in the cutting edge of research science.

I'll take that comment as the humor with which it surely must have been intended :-)

As my fortune (or misfortune?) might have it, I do in fact, work in a research environment where some 80% or more of my co-workers have a college degree with 50% Masters & PHDs.

I certainly understand the humor, but my original point would still stand.

What are the odds that this man simply stopped on the bridge and stood by the rail to peer off?
