Pakistan: Jail trial of sensitive cases notified (suspects involved in US Consulate bombing)

KARACHI, Aug 15: The Sindh government has notified the jail trial of all cases against several workers of Harkatul Mujahideen Al-Aalmi and Lashkar-i-Jhangvi for their alleged involvement in terrorist activities.

Three activists of Harkatul Mujahideen Al-Aalmi are allegedly involved in car bomb attack on the US Consulate and an abortive attempt to blow up President Musharraf's motorcade while four of Lashkar-i-Jhangvi men are allegedly involved in sectarian murders.

Sources told Dawn on Thursday that the provincial home authorities issued on Tuesday as many as seven notifications for the sitting of anti-terrorism courts on the premises of the Central Prison, Karachi, for conducting trial of over 40 cases.

The decision to hold the jail trial has been taken by the provincial authorities as a security measures.

The sources said the provincial authorities notified the jail trial of two workers of the Harkatul Mujahideen Al-Aalmi in cases pertaining to car bomb attack on US Consulate and conspiracy to kill President Pervez Musharraf.

They said the trial of as many as six cases against Mohammed Imran of Harkatul Mujahideen Al-Aalmi, the prime suspect in the US consulate bombing case, was notified to be conducted inside the jail by the provincial authorities. Five cases against him pertained to bomb blasts.

The sources said Mohammed Hanif, another worker of the Aalmi, was a co-accused with Imran in at least five cases. He was also booked for hatching a plot to destroy the car of President Musharraf by explosion.

The third worker of the Aalmi was booked in five cases and was a co-accused with the two workers in a couple of cases.

Besides, the notification of jail trial of Lashkar-i-Jhangvi activists has been orders.

The sources said Muhammed Ajmal alias Akram Lahori, the self-styled chief of the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, was involved in as many as 30 cases, including 26 sectarian murder cases.

The murder cases against him were registered with the police stations of Korangi (196/2002), Mominabad (53/2002), North Nazimabad (180/2001), Soldier Bazar (179/2001), Brigade (163/2002), Clifton (176/2002), Gizri (161/2001), Mehmoodabad (212/2001), Korangi Industrial Area (464/2001), Soldier Bazar (294/2001), Darakhshan (52/2002), Kharadar (36/2002), Saddar (38/2002), Gizri (63/2002), Baghdadi (51/2002), Shah Faisal Colony (23/2002), Korangi Industrial Area (143/2002), Mehmoodabad (62/2002), Rizvia (54/2002), North Nazimabad (180/2002), Peerabad (126/2002), Al-Fallah (78/2002), Rizvia (87/2002), Darakhshan (179/2002), Frere() and Rizvia (84/2002).

Three other cases against Akram Lahori pertained to attempt to murder and one case of possession of unlicensed weapons. The police have, so far, submitted final charge-sheets in only 13 cases against Akram Lahori.

These cases pertained to murder of Dr. Muhammed Raza Pirani on June 6, 2001 within the limits of Soldier Bazar, Syed Mushtaq Haider on July 20, 2001, in Brigade, Syed Jawad Hussain on Jan 29 in Darakhshan, Sadiq Ali Hamsheri on Feb 3 Kharadar, Ramzan Ali on Feb 11 in Saddar, Dr. Aley Safdar Zaidi on March 4 in Gizri, Anver Ali Tirmizi and Zulfiqar Haider on March 11 in Shah Faisal Colony, Constable Faiz on March 11 in Korangi Industrial Area, Mohammed Nazir on April 9 in North Nazimabad, and the murder of Zafar Mehdi and two others on May 6 in Al-Falah.

The trial of at least seven cases against Lahori was assigned to the Anti-terrorism Court No. 3, headed by Judge Arshad Noor Khan, and as many as 10 cases to the ATC-4, headed by Judge Khan Pervaiz Chang.

Sources said Mohammed Azam alias Sharif, son of Jan Mohammed, and Attaullah alias Atta Qasim, son of Mohammed Hashim, two other workers of the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, were co- accused with Lahori in as many as 24 murder cases.

The fourth worker of the Lashkar, Tassaduq Hussain alias Shaikh, son of Hashmatullah, was involved in 14 murder cases. Meanwhile, the ATC-4, headed by Judge Khan Pervaiz Chang, directed the superintendent of jail, Rashid Saeed, to make necessary arrangements for the trial after he placed on record the notification.

Besides, Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-3 issued show- cause notice to the jail superintendent for not producing the accused persons in the court. The judge ordered the JS to submit his reply on 19th.
