A quarter-million state employees can breathe easier after the state Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to hear an appeal of a case that would have cut their salaries to minimum wage absent a state budget.

The court's decision means that the case probably won't be resolved until after the budget is signed and that state workers will keep getting full pay despite the impasse.

The Democrats have been digging and digging for a issue in the budget stalemate. Today they may have found it.

Drive time radio this morning was full of the news that the state budget crisis was now affecting Cal Grants. Specifically, no Cal Grants for the fall semester.

For those of you from Rio Linda, Cal Grants are a form of welfare for students in the California State College System (not university system) whose parents make less than $20,000/per year. These grants can range up to high four figures annually.

The state colleges have been directed to forgive tutition for these students until the budget impass is settled but the bulk of the monies go for books, materials, housing and meals and for these items there is no state relief.

So on the way to work I listened to an ear full of "it's for the children". Sound familiar? Nobody mind you actually said "dirty Republicans" but it was clearly implied.
