On 20 July the US 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division, which had been operating the brigade-sized Task Force Rakkasan out of Bagram and Kandahar in Afghanistan under the aegis of Operation Enduring Freedom, handed over command to the 82nd Airborne Divisions Task Force Panther, which will take over security and combat operations in the region.
US and coalition forces continue to operate throughout Afghanistan to ensure Al-Qaeda and Taliban forces do not present a danger to US, coalition and friendly Afghan troops.
The 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division arrived in Afghanistan in January 2002 and worked alongside units such as the UKs Royal Marines and US and coalition special forces (Task Force 7). Its troops were key players in Operation Anaconda, which took place in February/ March, and Operation Mountain Lion, which was mounted in June/July. Both operations were critical in defeating Al-Qaeda and Taliban forces in the region, breaking their will to engage coalition forces in large-scale actions and denying them freedom of movement.
Under the overall command of General Tommy R Franks, Commander-in-Chief, US Central Command (CINC CENTCOM), around 16,000 US and coalition forces are still operating in Afghanistan under the operational control of the US-led Coalition Joint Task Force 180, headquartered at Bagram Air Base. Bagram is one of the largest centres of operations, with US and coalition troops living in and operating from Camp Viper, a large tented city located next to the main runway.
