When Richard the Lionheart fought the Third Crusade, the Assassains played a role separate from Saladin and the "Franks." Richard got smeared by the French King, Phillip, who left the Crusade early, with some allegegly Richard ordered assassainations but in reality ordered by the Old Man of the Mountain, the chief of the Assassains. The Old Man actually documented his kills in letters to European leaders and helped clear Richard's reputation.
