Because the fetus depends on the mother for life...

After the fetus is born, it is still unable to sustain itself. It cannot procure food for itself, it cannot house itself or protect itself from the elements, it cannot survive on its own for a number of years. By that logic, it should be OK to kill a fetus long after birth.

The placental barrier exists to protect the unborn baby from the toxicants of the mother. God is pretty smart.
