Slippers Said to Have Been Prophet Muhammad's Stolen From Pakistani Mosque

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) - Slippers believed to have been worn by the Prophet Muhammad were stolen this week from the renowned Badshahi mosque, officials said Friday. No suspects have been arrested and police were questioning eight employees of the mosque.

Pakistan has strict blasphemy laws under which people convicted of insulting Islam can be executed. Whoever stole the pair of slippers could face a death sentence, according to Ghulam Sarwar Qadri, the Religious Affairs Minister for Punjab province.

However, "no action will be taken if the culprits return these slippers voluntarily," he told a meeting of clerics in Lahore.

The 17th-century mosque in Lahore contains several relics attributed to Muhammad, including a green turban. The slippers were displayed in a glass case along with other relics near the main gate of the mosque.

The mosque, one of the world's largest, has a courtyard capable of accommodating approximately 60,000 people.
