Apparently, there's an urban legend that is similar to my experience. Why that should embarrass me I have no idea. But it brings up a good point; there are all sorts of people who have the potential to make our air travel uncomfortable, whether it's a large person, a person of another race, a religious person who insists on sharing their religion through out the flight, a parent who flies with an unruly child on their lap, on and on and on. With a little bit of patience and quick-thinking airline employees, no one need be embarassed or too put-out.
